Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe was sworn in as the Acting President of Sri Lanka today.
The Prime Minister’s Media Division said he was sworn in as the Acting President before Chief Justice Jayantha Jayasuriya.
Ranil Wickremesinghe was appointed as the Acting President by former President Gotabaya Rajapaksa on Wednesday (13) after the latter fled to the Maldives due to public uprisings calling for his resignation.
Gotabaya Rajapaksa tendered his resignation yesterday (14) after arriving in Singapore, officially vacating the post of President, following which Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe takes over as Acting President temporarily as per the Constitution.
The Parliament will convene tomorrow (16) to commence the procedure of electing a new President. (NewsWire)
