Ranjan admitted to Karapitiya Hospital : No progress in pardon request

Former Parliamentarian Ranjan Ramanayake is reportedly receiving treatment at the Karapitiya hospital, after being admitted a few days ago due to a sudden illness.

The Samagi Jana Balawegaya (SJB) member has been sentenced to four years imprisonment over contempt of court charges.

The SJB said a request has been made from President Gotabaya Rajapaksa to grant a presidential pardon to Ramanayake.

Former MP Duminda Silva, who was on death row, was released after being granted a presidential pardon on Thursday.

However, according to Justice Ministry sources, the request for a presidential pardon for Ranjan Ramanayake has not been processed by the Government yet.

Despite a number of negotiations between the Government and the SJB having taken place in this regard, action has not been taken on the request thus far, they added.

Several Government members, including Sports Minister Namal Rajapaksa have stated that they will seek a presidential pardon for Ranjan Ramanayke from the President. (NewsWire)
