Former Parliamentarian Ranjan Ramanayake left the Welikada prison after receiving a special presidential pardon today.
The Samagi Jana Balawegaya member was convicted over contempt of court charges and was sentenced to a prison term of four years of rigorous imprisonment in January 2021.
He was released on a conditional presidential pardon issued by President Ranil Wickremesinghe today.
The President’s Media Division (PMD) said the presidential pardon has been granted on the condition that the former MP will not make statements against the judiciary in the future.
The conditional presidential pardon comes after the SJB member yesterday apologized to the court for committing contempt of court, stating that his comments were untrue and that he would withdraw the said comments. (NewsWire)
