Ranjan sentenced to 4 years rigorous imprisonment for criticising judges and lawyers

Opposition MP Ranjan Ramanayake was sentenced to 4 years rigorous imprisonment by the Supreme Court today, over the contempt of court case.

The verdict was delivered by the Supreme Court three-judge-bench comprising of Justices Sisira de Abrew, Vijith Malalgoda, and Preethi Padman Surasena.

A case was filed against MP Ramanayake accusing him of allegedly slandering the judiciary while speaking to the media.

Following a discussion with former Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe at Temple Trees on August 21, 2017, MP Ramanayake had told media that the majority of judges and lawyers in the country were corrupt.

A case was thereafter filed at the Supreme Court against former Minister Ramanayake based on a complaint filed at the Court by Ven. Magalkande Sudantha Thero and retired Air Force officer Sunil Perera.

The complaint cited that MP Ranjan Ramanayake has insulted the judiciary by undermining the public’s trust in the judiciary.

MP Ranjan Ramanayake will lose his Parliament seat due to his sentencing. (NewsWire)
