Ranjan’s Contempt of Court case verdict postponed due to SC fire

The hearing of the first contempt of court case filed against Samagi Jana Balawegaya (SJB) MP Ranjan Ramanayake was postponed today.

The case was postponed as a result of the fire that broke out at the Supreme Court complex yesterday, while MP Ramanayake and his team were informed by the Court not to appear for the hearing today.

The Supreme Court was set to deliver its verdict today on the contempt of court case filed against MP Ramanayake.

The verdict was to be delivered by Supreme Court three-judge-bench comprising Justice Sisira de Abrew, Justice Vijith Malalgoda and Justice Preethi Padman Surasena.

A case was filed against MP Ramanayake accusing him of allegedly slandering the judiciary while speaking to the media.

Following a discussion with former Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe at Temple Trees on August 21, 2017, MP Ramanayake had told media that the majority of judges and lawyers in the country were corrupt.

A case was thereafter filed at the Supreme Court against former Minister Ramanayake based on a complaint filed in the Supreme Court by Ven. Magalkande Sudantha Thero and retired Air Force officer Sunil Perera.

The complaint cited that MP Ranjan Ramanayake has insulted the judiciary by undermining the public’s trust in the judiciary. (NewsWire)
