Ruwan Wijewardane elected as UNP Deputy Leader

Former MP Ruwan Wijewardena was elected as the Deputy Leader of the United National Party (UNP) today.

The UNP member was elected via a secret ballot held among members of the UNP Working Committee.

Wijewardena received 28 votes and defeated UNP member and former Minister Ravi Karunanayake, who obtained 10 votes, to be elected as the new Deputy Leader.

The post of Deputy leader was reportedly left vacant after Samagi Jana Balawegaya (SJB) leader Sajith Premadasa was removed from the post in July.

His suspension comes in line with the 104 UNP members who were expelled from the party for joining and supporting the SJB in the General Elections in August 2020. (NewsWire)
