A majority of the Sri Lanka Podujana Peramuna (SLPP) supports the nomination of MP Dullas Alahapperuma for the post of President, SLPP Chairman Prof. G.L Peiris said today.
Speaking to reporters, he said the SLPP is also clear of its mandate to appoint Opposition and Samagi Jana Balawegaya Leader Sajith Premadasa as the Prime Minister of Sri Lanka.
He further said that the people have voiced their need for a system change, adding that the only way forward is an all-party government at present to resolve the issues in the country.
MP Peiris, however, denied that there was a division within the SLPP, explaining that party members are free to voice their support for any candidate contesting for the Presidency.
Prof. G.L Peiris’ comments come after the SLPP backed two candidates for the presidency in Parliament today.
An SLPP faction backed by MP Dinesh Gunawardena nominated Ranil Wickremesinghe, while an SLPP faction backed by G.L Peiris together with Opposition Leader MP Sajith Premadasa nominated Dullas Alahapperuma.
The vote to elect a new President will be held via a secret ballot in Parliament tomorrow (20). (NewsWire)
