The schools’ cricket big match season has kicked off these days.
The Battle of Ruhuna encounter between St. Thomas’ College, Matara and St. Servatius’ College, Matara commenced at the Hambantota Cricket stadium, and was graced by old boy of St. Servatius’ College, former Sri Lanka cricket Sanath Jayasuriya, as the Chief Guest.
The schools’ big match cricket encounters have been scheduled to take place without spectators due to the prevalent coronavirus pandemic in the country.
The Battle of Ruhuna is the first encounter to kick off, and played since 1900, it is the second oldest school cricket series in Sri Lanka, after the annual Battle of the Blues encounter between Royal College, Colombo and St. Thomas’ College Mount Lavinia.
Meanwhile, the 142nd Royal-Thomian cricket match, which is considered as the uninterrupted blue-ribbon cricket encounter, will get underway from the 6th to the 8th of May, 2021, at the Mahinda Rajapaksa International Cricket Stadium – Suriyaweva, Hambantota.
The match, which is played for the prestigious Rt. Hon. D. S. Senanayake Memorial Shield, will take place behind closed doors keeping in line with the COVID-19 restrictions and the health & safety guidelines mandated by Ministry of Health.
The 142nd Battle of the Blues cricket encounter will see the Sri Lanka Cricket (SLC) regulating the playing conditions and will be broadcast LIVE. (NewsWire)
