A school principal has been sentenced to 2 –years rigorous imprisonment suspended for 5 years on charges of using corporal punishment on a 12-year-old boy.
The Special Police Unit of the National Child Protection Authority (NCPA) had conducted an investigation after a receiving a complaint on the incident that had taken place in 2013.
The 52-year-old suspect from Colombo had been arrested by the NCPA Police Unit following which an investigation was commenced.
The Attorney General had thereafter filed a case at the Colombo High Court where the suspect had pleaded guilty.
The Court had sentenced the suspect to 2 –years rigorous imprisonment suspended over a period of 05-years, and a fine of Rs. 5000.
The prison term of the suspect is to be extended by a further 03-months in the event he fails to pay the fine, while he has also been ordered to pay Rs. 25,000 as compensation to the affected child.
The Court had further advised to extend the prison term by a year if the suspect fails to pay the compensation to the child. (NewsWire)
