NEW DELHI: The Earth could be impacted by a high-speed solar storm, approaching at 1,6 million kilometers per hour, according to information released by Nasa.
It could affect satellite signals and communication networks, as well as interfere with GPS systems, mobile and TV It could also interfere with power transmission.
Solar storms are huge bursts of charged particles, ejected from the Sun’s atmosphere into space.
The current storm is a result of a ‘hole’ in the Sun’s equatorial region. It is expected to lash the Earth later on Tuesday. Nasa first detected it on July 3, and classified it as an X1.5-class flare.
X-class denotes the most intense flares, while the number provides more information about its strength. An X2 is twice as intense as an X1, an X3 is three times as intense, etc.
These geo-magnetic storms pose no major risk to human health. However disruption in power and communication systems is common. Mobile, TV and satellite transmissions can also be affected by these powerful phenomena.
Those residing in higher latitudes may get to witness spectacular aurora activity. Solar storms, loaded with charged particles, interact with the earth’s magnetic fields to produce the celestial displays in the night skies. (Times of India)
