Sri Lanka President Gotabaya Rajapaksa has emailed a letter of resignation to Speaker Mahinda Yapa Abeywardena.
Sri Lanka Speaker’s media office confirms receiving President Gotabaya Rajapaksa’s letter of resignation but says an official announcement will be done once the legality of the letter is confirmed.
According to sources, the official announcement has been delayed because Speaker Mahinda Yapa Abeywardena wants to verify the authenticity of the letter.
Sri Lanka High Commission in Singapore has been reportedly instructed to obtain the hard copy of the letter from President Gotabaya Rajapaksa.
Speaker has also referred the matter to the Attorney General’s Department to obtain necessary legal advice.
Meanwhile, Reuters reported that President Rajapaksa’s original resignation letter is to be flown into Colombo from Singapore at the earliest. (NewsWire)
