Sri Lankan Embassy statement on MP Uddika Premarathne’s Japan visit

Member of Parliament from the Anuradhapura District Uddika Premarathne is currently undertaking a visit to Japan.

Issuing a statement, the Embassy of Sri Lanka in Tokyo said MP Premaratne will be in Japan from 31 July to 11 August 2022.

During his stay in Japan, Parliamentarian Premarathne is scheduled to meet several key dignitaries of the Government of Japan with a view to strengthening bilateral relations between Sri Lanka and Japan as well as promoting investment opportunities, and collaborative projects in the fields of agriculture, foreign employment, and primary education.

On 1 August 2022, MP Premaratne called on the Minister of Environment of Japan, Tsuyoshi Yamaguchi, and took the opportunity to appreciate Japan’s development assistance to Sri Lanka.  Under the umbrella of Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), MP Premarathne invited Japan to consider establishing industrial plants in waste recycling and introduce the transfer of various technologies that convert non-recyclable waste into renewable energy. Explaining the potential in export-oriented production of fertilizer in Anuradhapura, Sri Lanka, he welcomed Japan to consider investments in this sector.

During his stay in Tokyo, Parliamentarian Premarathne met with a Member of the House of Representatives from the ruling Liberal Democratic Party (LDP) Satoshi Fujimaru, who is the Acting Director, Foreign Affairs Division of the LDP and former Parliamentary Vice-Minister of Defense. MP Premarathna sought Japan’s assistance in improving the standard of preschool education, teaching methods, and facilities in the Anuradhapura district to reach a level similar to Japan’s preschool education system. Former Minister of State for Regional Revitalization, Regulatory Reform Kozo Yamamoto who coordinated the high-level meetings was also present. Chargé d’Affaires a.i. of the Sri Lanka Embassy in Japan Sesath Thambugala accompanied Parliamentarian Premarathne in his meetings.

The visiting Parliamentarian also attended an event organized for him by the Embassy of Sri Lanka in Tokyo to interact with representatives of six Sri Lanka-Japan Associations at the Embassy premises on 01 August 2022.

Parliamentarian Premaratne is expected to call on the Minister of Foreign Affairs of Japan on 10 August 2022. During his visit to Kita-kyushu City in Fukuoka Prefecture in Japan, MP Premarathne is scheduled to meet several regional Mayors and government officials and will also visit Hiroshima City.
