A suspect who had died while in Police custody is reported to have been infected with COVID-19, the Police said.
The suspect was arrested on Sunday during a raid at Yatadola in Mathugama for the possession of illicit liquor.
The 40-year-old suspect had collapsed while being transported to the Police Station after being arrested by the Mathugama Police.
The man had been admitted to the Wettewa Hospital after falling unconscious but was pronounced dead upon admission.
A PCR conducted by the hospital had confirmed that the man had contracted the coronavirus.
A postmortem examination conducted by the Judicial Medical Officer (JMO) of the Nagoda Hospital had later revealed that he had died due to COVID pneumonia.
The report also revealed that no internal or external bleeding was found on the suspect’s body. (NewsWire)
