A suspect arrested in Keselwatte, Panadura has been identified to have promoted Islamic extremism in Sri Lanka.
Police Spokesman Deputy Inspector General of Police (DIG) Ajith Rohana said the man had been arrested by the Peliyagoda Police over a drug offence months ago.
Investigations had later revealed that the 34-year-old man had received a large sum of money to his personal bank account from Dubai, United Arab Emirates.
The suspect had been placed under a detention order to be interrogated in this regard.
DIG Rohana said further investigations had revealed that the suspect had deposited a sum of the money to an organization promoting Islamic extremism.
The suspect had thereafter been handed over to the Terrorism Investigation Division (TID) for further inquiries.
The Police Spokesman said the man has been accused of promoting Islamic extremism by providing funds for this purpose.
DIG Ajith Rohana said funding and promoting organizations involved in terrorism or extremism is an offence under the Prevention of Terrorism Act (PTA).
The suspect has been identified as a resident of Keselwatte in Panadura. (NewsWire)
