The Criminal Investigation Department (CID) has arrested two foreign nationals in connection with cheating money from several local women through social media.
Police said the two suspects are Nigerian nationals. Investigations have revealed that both the suspects did not have passports and they are in the possession of the court.
03 complaints have been received to the police regarding these suspects and all of them have been made by women, the police said.
These women have complained that an amount of Rs. 1,045,000 was defrauded on 19/01/2023, Rs. 10,222,634 on 07/03/2023 and an amount of Rs. 18,531,676 on 06/07/2023.
Accordingly, investigation has been launched by the Social Media Unit of the Cyber Crimes Investigation Division of the Criminal Investigation Department.
It has been revealed that two complainants were contacted by these suspects through social media and claimed to be doctors and had a romantic relationship with them and defrauded them of money.
The other woman has been reportedly cheated by saying that she won a car and the value was sent by a check and other documents of the car by a courier service.
The facts have been reported to the court in this regard and the police said that the two suspects were arrested in Aluthgama area after receiving information about the bank accounts.
According to the CCTV footage, the two were identified, and at the time of their arrest, 14 ATM cards and 05 mobile phones were taken into police custody.
