Tense situation as Opposition calls for inquiry over ‘false’ Parliament tweet on Google Loon cost

Samagi Jana Balawegaya MP Harin Fernando called on the Speaker of Parliament to investigate a statement shared on the official Parliament twitter account on the Google Loon project.

Addressing Parliament today, MP Fernando said the Parliament twitter account has stated that the Committee on Public Enterprises (COPE) has revealed that Rs. 1.8 million has been spent to release Google Loon equipment from the customs and Rs. 6.4 million has been spent for project promotions.

Pointing out that this was in contradiction to the details provided by the current Chairman of the Information and Communication Technology Agency (ICTA), MP Harin Fernando said that certain local media were publishing factually incorrect information.

He further called on the Speaker to summon the officials handling the Parliament twitter account, and two private local media channels publishing such content before the Committee on Ethics and Privileges of the Parliament to investigate the matter. (NewsWire)
