The death toll from the shooting incident which took place at the Thirukkovil police has risen to four, as one of the police officer being treated at the Kalmunai hospital succumbed to his injuries.
The shooting took place around 10:30 pm last night. Three persons were killed on-the-spot when a Sargent attached to the same police station opened fire on his colleagues.
It is reported that the OIC of the police station had left the station on some duty at the time when the shooting had taken place.
When the OIC was arriving at the station, the suspect sergeant had reportedly shot at the vehicle the OIC was arriving. The vehicle had then skidded off and crashed on to a nearby building.
The suspect sergeant has surrendered to the Athimale police with the firearm and is to be referred for a medical examination.
Police have not yet identified the reason for the shooting.
