A key activist of the ‘Aragalaya’ people’s movement, Randimal Gamage has been arrested.
Police spokesman SSP Nihal Thalduwa said that Gamage was arrested upon his arrival at the Katunayaka Airport from Dubai.
He further said the ‘Aragalaya’ activist was arrested over the incident of illegally entering the Sri Lanka Rupavahini Corporation (SLRC) during anti-government protests in 2022.
On 13th July 2022, the SLCRC was forced to halt transmission for a short period after anti-government protesters had breached the state-own media institution.
A group of protestors who had entered the premises had demanded that they run only news related to ‘anti-government protests’ and entertainment programs. The protesters had been provided some 15 minutes to convey their side of the story to the viewers, after which the channel suspended transmission.
The incident had taken place when mass anti-government protests broke out calling for a change in government and the resignation of former President Gotabaya Rajapaksa due to the severe economic crisis in Sri Lanka.
Meanwhile, former President Gotabaya Rajapaksa who was also on holiday in Dubai returned to Sri Lanka today.
The former President was last seen visiting Dubai’s private ‘Fame Park’ by Saif Belhasa. (NewsWire)
