Uninterrupted power supply : PUCSL explains situation

Chairman of the Public Utilities commission of Sri Lanka ( PUCSL), Janaka Rathnayake says that comments by politicians regarding uninterrupted power supply are baseless.

Addressing the media today, Janaka Rathnayake said that all measures have been taken to impose minimum power cuts, including a decision not to impose any night time power cuts during the time period of GCE Ordinary Levels examinations staring from tomorrow (23).

Minister of Power and Energy, Kanchana Wijesekara yesterday said that government has prioritized fuel supply for power generation and contemplating on providing uninterrupted power supply to the country starting early next week.

He further said that the government had anyway planned to provide uninterrupted power supply starting from the 1st of June. However, with adequate fuel consignments being received, government has decided to check on the possibility to provide 24-hour electricity earlier than that.

Responding to journalists’ question on this matter, the PUCSL chairman said that these statements made by the political authorities are baseless and the general public should not pay much attention to them.

“Earlier we saw certain political authorities claiming that power cut durations may extend to 15-hours a day, later we see some other political figures commenting about providing uninterrupted power supply. Both these claims are absolutely baseless” he said.

“The PUCSL is the authority which provides the government with a compete plan on how to manage the power generation until end of this year, with minimum interruption. Other claims of non interruptions and extending the power cut hours are all made without consulting us or doing a proper technical analysis” he further added.

“We need fuel worth US $ 75 million a month to give uniterrupted electricity, if the Government can give that then we can give uniterrupted electricity” Janaka Ratnayake added. (NewsWire)
