UNP Leadership crisis: “I am ready”, Karu tells Ranil

Former Speaker of Parliament Karu Jayasuriya has officially informed the United National Party (UNP) that he is prepared to accept the Leadership of the UNP.

Issuing a statement, Jayasuriya said he has already informed the leader of the UNP Ranil Wickremesinghe and senior party members in this regard.

On 14 August, the UNP reached an agreement to elect a new and young leader for the party during a discussion between Wickremesinghe and the UNP Working Committee.

Former UNP MPs Ravi Karunanayake, Daya Gamage, Akila Viraj Kariyawasam, Vajira Abeygunawardana, Arjuna Ranatunga, Navin Dissanayake and Ruwan Wijewardane were nominated as potential young leaders to replace Ranil Wickramasinghe.

It was later announced that Ranil Wickremesinghe will remain as UNP leader for the next 06 months and will quit his position only after the upcoming Provincial Council elections. (Newswire)
