UNP & SJB clash over party colour

The United National Party (UNP) has clarified as per its party constitution the colour green symbolises the UNP and as per the constitution of the Samagi Jana Balawegaya (SJB) the colour blue symbolises the party.

The UNP made the clarification in a letter addressed to the Chairman of the National Election Commission Mahinda Deshapriya.

The UNP pointed out that however, the Samagi Jana Balawegaya is using green as part of its campaign activities for the General Election 2020.

“This shows that the Samagi Jana Balawegaya is intentionally using green rather than blue to symbolise its party, in order to derail the campaign activities of the United National Party.” UNP General Secretary Akila Viraj Kariyawasam said

The Samagi Jana Balawegaya by using the colour green, which is the official party colour of the UNP, is causing severe inconvenience for the UNP, the party said.

The UNP stated that by bringing the issue to the notice of Deshapriya, it calls on him as the Chairman of the National Election Commission to prevent the Samagi Jana Balawegaya from using in its election campaigns the UNP’s official colour green.

In response to the UNP’s allegations, the Samagi Jana Balawegaya has said the party is at liberty to use any colour it wishes.

SJB senior member Sujeewa Senasinghe clarified that the official colours symbolising the Samagi Jana Balawegaya are green and yellow.

A colour could be the identity of a particular party, but there is no steadfast law stating that a political party must use a particular colour, he added.

“People don’t vote for colours, it’s very sad to see how low UNP has fallen arguing over minor matters like this.” Sujeewa Senasinghe added.
