Shashi Weerawansa, the wife of former Minister Wimal Weerawansa, has submitted an appeal challenging the decision given by the Colombo Magistrate’s Court to imprison her.
Shashi Weerawansa’s appeal submitted through her lawyers will be taken up for consideration on Monday, the 30th of May 2022.
Earlier today, Shashi Weerawansa was sentenced to 2 years of imprisonment for the use of forged documents to obtain a passport.
The Colombo Magistrate’s Court also imposed a fine of Rs 100,000 on Shashi Weerawansa when the case in this regard was taken up for hearing today.
The court further said that the prison sentence will be extended by another 6 months if Shashi Weerawansa fails to pay the fine.
The court also issued an order to hand over a copy of the verdict to the Secretary of the Ministry of Public Administration to take action against state officials who had assisted Shashi Weerawansa to obtain the passport.
Weerawansa is accused of fraudulently obtaining two passports, including a diplomatic passport, by submitting forged documents to the Department of Immigration and Emigration.
Weerawansa, who had submitted documents with forged names and dates of birth to obtain the passports, was initially arrested in February 2015 and later released on bail.
Thereafter, the Colombo Chief Magistrate issued a warrant on Shashi Weerawansa.
Shashi Weerawansa will be under remand custody until her appeal is taken up for hearing on the 30th of May. (NewsWire)
