Video footage of the attack on former Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe has been shared by the Japanese TV channel NHK.
Abe collapsed bleeding and was in heart failure after apparently being shot during a campaign speech in western Japan today. He was rushed to a hospital.
Witnesses reported hearing gunshots in the apparent attack in Nara. He was standing while making an election campaign speech ahead of Sunday’s election for the parliament’s upper house.
The suspect has been arrested but the motive for the attack is still unknown.
Japanese Prime Minister Fumio Kishida reports Abe is in serious condition after the assassination attempt.
According to the Kyodo News Agency, the former prime minister suffered a gunshot wound to the right side of his neck during the attack. (NewsWire)
