Former Minister and Chairman of United National Party (UNP) Vajira Abeywardena has revealed how former PM Ranil Wickramasinghe stripped the powers of former President Maithripala Sirisena in 2015.
“Sirisena told that he will keep calling him (Ranil) ‘Sir’ throughout his life if he can make him the President. But Ranil knew exactly who Sirisena was. Therefore he removed all the powers from him and took them under his control” he said.
Addressing a gathering of party supporters, Abeywardena was critical about the former President. He went on to say how powers of the President were reduced through constitutional amendments.
He also revealed how Ranil Wickramasinghe reacted when he heard the news that Mahinda Rajapaksa had sworn in has the Prime Minister during the constitutional crisis in October 2018. (NewsWire)
