WATCH : Govt. & Opp members clash over jogging track dispute

A brawl had broken out between a group of the ruling party and opposition members of the Nawalapitiya Urban Council when the latter had arrived at the Jayathilaka Grounds in Nawalapitiya on a fact-finding mission.

The opposition members had arrived to inquire pertaining to the proposed jogging track in the vicinity of the grounds, which is being constructed at a cost of nearly Rs. 20 million.

Former Nawalapitiya Urban Council Chairman and National Samagi Jana Balawegaya member Sasanka Sampath Sanjeewa, two opposition members of the Nawalapitiya Urban Council, and their supporters had visited the location.

However, the Urban Council is reported to have shut the entrance to the Jayathilaka Grounds in Nawalapitiya.

Chairman of the Nawalapitiya Urban Council Amal Priyankara, two ruling party councilors, and their supporters had thereafter arrived at the location, after which an argument between the two parties had resulted in a brawl.

Despite the Nawalapitiya Police having arrived at the location and breaking out the clash, the two parties had continued to make numerous attempts to assault each other.

Both parties have filed a complaint with the Nawalapitiya Police on the incident, while three supporters of the National Samagi Jana Balawegaya party have been admitted to the Nawalapitiya District Hospital with injuries. (NewsWire)
