A heated argument ensued between former Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe and Samagi Jana Balawegaya MP Vadivel Suresh in Parliament today.
The argument occurred when the United National Party (UNP) leader responded to a question on privilege raised by MP Vadivel Suresh.
MP Suresh had pointed out that former MPs and UNP seniors have issued death threats to him after storming into the office of the Janatha Estate Workers Union with weapons.
Responding to MP Suresh, UNP MP Wickremesinghe said that the matter was before courts and it was subject to sub judice, adding that as it was a pending court case, the Speaker will only be able to look into it after the case has concluded.
MP Suresh thereafter responded stating that it was unfair for Wickremesinghe to prevent justice being meted out to a trade unionist
“I am a trade unionist. Therefore you cannot prevent justice done to me,” he said, preventing wickremsinghe from continuing his statement.
In response to MP Suresh’s claims, MP Wickremesinghe called on the Speaker, stating “Mr. Speaker, please make this lunatic sit.”
Also joining in the argument, Samagi Jana Balawegaya MP Harin Fernando said MP Wickremesinghe was correct in pointing out that there is a court case involved in the issue. In
He pointed out that, however, MP Suresh had only raised a matter of privillege as an MP. (NewsWire)
