Several people travelling to Colombo to participate in the rally organized by the Opposition Samagi Jana Balawegaya (SJB) party today have reportedly been blocked by the Police from traveling to Colombo.
The SJB has organized a meeting at the Hyde Park grounds in Colombo 2 at 02 pm today and will also hold a protest march against what the party claimed was the “curse-filled” and “problems-piling” Government.
The Police yesterday sought court orders to prevent the party from staging the rally and protest march due to Covid-19 concerns.
Nearly 31 courts had refused to ban the protest, while certain courts had issued orders banning the planned rally and protest march.
Despite the court orders banning the protest march, the Samagi Jana Balawegaya said it will go ahead with the rally and protest march as it is their democratic right.
However, according to area reporters, several people coming from various parts of the country to participate in the protest march in Colombo have been obstructed by the Police from traveling to the city.
Concerns were also raised in Parliament today over snap checkpoints established around the island.
The SJB said that it suspects the heavy security presence was an attempt to disrupt a protest scheduled to be staged by the opposition in Colombo today. (NewsWire)
