Nearly 200 women are reported to have died by suicide as a result of obtaining microfinance loans in Sri Lanka over the past few years.
During a panel discussion on Hari TV, a few women who had obtained such loans revealed that they have received death threats and have also been requested for sexual favours in exchange of loan repayments.
Women in the North and North-Eastern Provinces are reportedly facing severe issues due to the (illegitimate) microfinance loan schemes, which was conceptually designed to benefit women in need of financial assistance. (NewsWire)
