WATCH: SJB boycotts Parliament, PM talks to protesting MPs

Parliamentarians from Opposition Samagi Jana Balawegaya (SJB) today staged a protest opposite the Parliament as they decided to boycott Parliament sessions.

SJB General Secretary MP Ranjith Madduma Bandara said the SJB Parliamentarians have engaged in the protest, refusing to enter the Parliament until their safety is assured.

The protest comes after the SJB accused the ruling party MPs of trying to assault SJB MP Manusha Nanayakkara on two occasions after his speeches in Parliament on Friday (03) and Saturday (04).

Meanwhile, Speaker Mahinda Yapa Abeywardena announced today that a committee comprising of senior members from the Government and the Opposition will be appointed to investigate the matter.

He further said that the committee will call for a report on the recent unruly behaviour of members in the House.

Prime Minister Mahinda Rajapaksa who had arrived in Parliament was also seen talking to the protesting SJB Parliamentarians.

The Prime Minister is reported to have reminded MP Rajitha Senaratna that the area where the SJB MPs were protesting today was the same area he had protested years ago. (NewsWire)
