The Department of Meteorology has predicted rain in several areas of Sri Lanka today (Jan 01).
Showers or thundershowers will sometimes occur in the Uva and Southern provinces and the Ampara, and Batticaloa districts. Several spells of showers will occur in the North-Central province and the Trincomalee district. A few showers are likely in the Northern province.
Showers or thundershowers may occur at several places elsewhere on the island after 2.00 p.m. Heavy showers of about 100 mm are likely at some places in the Western, Sabaragamuwa, Southern, Central and Uva provinces.
Fairly strong winds of about 30-35 kmph can be expected at times in the Northern, North-Western and Uva provinces and the Hambantota district.
Meanwhile, showers or thundershowers can occur at times in the sea areas off the coast extending from Trincomalee to Galle via Pottuvil and Hambantota. Showers or thundershowers may occur at several places elsewhere in the sea areas around the island during the afternoon or night.
Winds will be north-easterly and wind speed will be 25-35 kmph. Wind speed may increase up to 40-50 kmph at times in the sea areas off the coasts extending from Colombo to Kankasanthurai via Puttalam and Mannar and from Pottuvil to Galle via Hambantota.
The sea areas off the coasts extending from Colombo to Kankasanthurai via Puttalam and Mannar and from Pottuvil to Galle via Hambantota will be fairly rough at times. The other sea areas around the island will be moderate.
Temporarily strong gusty winds and very rough seas can be expected during thundershowers. (NewsWire)
