Samagi Jana Balawegaya (SJB) member Rehan Jayawickreme has been removed from his post as the Chairman of the Weligama Urban Council (UC).
The National Elections Commission has taken steps to issue a gazette notification announcing the removal.
Earlier, the Court of Appeal had dismissed a petition filed by Jayawickreme against the attempt by the UNP to have him removed from his post.
The court had last month upheld a decision taken by the UNP to take action against a group of party members who had worked for the SJB while being part of the UNP during the General Elections in 2020.
Responding to his removal as the Chairman of the Weligama UC, Rehan Jayawickreme said ‘the people have not removed him, but it’s the United National Party that did.’
UNP in a statement re-iterated that the decision by the Election Commission to remove the Weligama Chairman from his post was carried out on the instructions of the Supreme Court of Sri Lanka.
“The UNP initiated disciplinary action against several members for failing to adhere to
the Constitution of the Party. These members challenged the disciplinary action in the
court of law. The courts subsequently ruled against these members and instructed the
Election Commission to remove them from their positions.” UNP statement added.
