What happened in PM’s meeting with teachers ?

A discussion took place between Prime Minister Mahinda Rajapaksa and representatives of the Teachers and Principals’ Trade Unions at Temple Trees in Colombo today.

The discussion focussed on the various issues, including salary anomalies faced by teachers and principals.

The Trade Union leaders have announced that they will draw a decision tomorrow on the issues discussed today.

Ceylon Teachers Union (CTU) General Secretary Joseph Stalin stated that the Prime Minister had stated that the issues pertaining to salary anomalies can be resolved in three stages.

The Prime Minister had further stated that the first phase will be implemented in January 2022, while the remaining two phases will be implemented in January 2023.

Finance Ministry officials have informed that it is impossible to resolve the issue at once under the Budget 2022, Stalin said.

Meanwhile, Ceylon Teachers’ Service Union (CTSU) General Secretary Mahinda Jayasinghe said the trade unions will gather tomorrow and draw a final decision with regard to today’s discussion.

He further said the trade unions will continue their trade union actions until their issues are resolved.

Thereby, the teachers’ and principals’ trade unions will continue to refrain from conducting online lectures for school students. (NewsWire)
