A woman accused of importing heroin from India disguised in 50 turmeric tins in 2003 has been acquitted and released from the case after a trial of almost 20 years.
According to the Divaina Newspaper, Negombo High Court judge R.D.P. Rathnayake released the defendant citing that the plaintiff failed to submit enough evidence to prove the case against the defendant.
The released woman is a 64-year-old resident of Mabola, Wattala. She was served indictments for allegedly importing 234 grams of heroin from India in 2003.
The husband of the said woman had been sentenced in India regarding a heroin related offense and she had brought these heroin filled turmeric tins on her way back from seeing her husband in prison in India.
The defendant has alleged that she had not known that these tins contained heroin and this was given by a someone to be handed over to a relative in Sri Lanka.
After a long trial, she was acquitted and released from the case on 26th of this month as proper evidence to prove the case against her were not submitted by the complainant. (NewsWire)
