The Cabinet has agreed to amend the Shop and Office Act in order to enable women involved in IT-based industries to work the night shift.
The proposal in this regard was presented by the Minister of Labour and Foreign Employment Manusha Nanayakkara.
Thereby, the Shop and Office Act will be amended to enable women in IT-based industries to work according to the time zone of foreign countries.
The amendments will allow women above the age of 18 years in IT-based industries to work before 06.00 am and after 06.00 pm, which was earlier prevented through the Shop and Office Act.
Earlier, women above 18- years were only permitted to work until 08.00 pm in certain industries, such as airport service and hotels.
The Labour Minister hopes to remove all regulations that obstruct women from working at night and further strengthen the female workforce in Sri Lanka. (NewsWire)
