Youth population highly reluctant to get Covid vaccination in Colombo

Only an estimated 20% of the youth population between the ages of 20-29 have been vaccinated so far in Sri Lanka, health authorities revealed.

Colombo Municipal Council (CMC) Chief Medical Officer of Health Dr. Ruwan Wijemuni said the younger population in the said age group have shown a great reluctance in receiving the COVID jab in the Colombo City.

Stating that there are 97,000 youth in the Colombo city limits who are eligible to be vaccinated, he said only 20% have received the vaccine so far.

Dr. Wijemuni pointed out that this was a matter of serious concern and could lead to hygienic turmoil, adding that people who haven’t received their vaccines as yet, are not only putting themselves in danger but others as well.

The CMC Chief Medical Officer of Health urged the youth population who are yet to obtain their vaccines to do so without further delay or hesitation.

Earlier, it was revealed that a cause of hesitancy among the younger generation to get the vaccine was due to myths such as Covid vaccines would cause infertility and sexual dysfunction.

The health authorities have, however, vehemently rejected anything of that sort, urging the younger population to get vaccinated at the earliest. (NewsWire)
